50 years of Polar products Founded in 1976 by Doug Campbell, an inspirational and blue sky thinking founder – Doug sought a tool for tracing short circuits on PCB assemblies post wave soldering.
Doug Campbell The result was the Toneohm 400A, a tone-guided short circuit locator – so called because an audio tone pitch increased as you sought out the short circuit. |

Doug’s thinking evident as he added the A to the 400 to give the impression to prospective customers that this was already our “A” or second version. Toneohms and PCB short location weave a continuous thread through Polar's history up to the recently released Toneohm 950A with its unique Vector Plane Stimulus for tracing shorts between power and ground planes. |
